How To Get Your Customized Home Workout

What I'm about to suggest might not make many personal trainers happy, but it will probably make you happy...It's going to save you several hundred dollars...maybe even more. I'm going to share with you how to create a customized at home workout that will deliver the results you want.

I am a big supporter of people finding exercise that works for them, so when I'm teaching pilates and I see someone struggle with the concepts in the pilates method, I adjust our workout to feel less like pilates. I'll admit that openly. Even though we still do pilates, I try to present in a different way, so they just feel a gentle, stretching, strengthening workout. Same Results. Different Path...kind of.

Now, recently, I've had 2 clients who are going out of town and we didn't want to lose ground. Instead of me just writing down their travel pilates program, we videotaped them doing their own workouts. They'll access the video on their laptop and be able to do the same workout at home and on the road whenever they want.

This is a great way to get your own customized at home workout. Here are the steps to getting your own at home workout program on video.

First, you will need to do some research. Find the names of independent personal trainers in your area. Trainers at the big gyms are probably not going to be excited to have you videotape their sessions. Make sure you get ready to be humble but also be able to tell the person why you are hoping they can help you. If it's money preventing you from starting your at home workout, then tell the trainer. You might have to negotiate a mini session package or a recurring once a month session with the trainer to renew your workout.

*I'm using the word personal trainer here, but that just means someone who does private sessions in whatever type of exercise you want to do: yoga, pilates, resistance training, or other specialized body work.

*The trainer will probably want to use your video to get other new clients - make sure that you discuss this, so you understand everything he/she might want to use the footage for. And considering that he/she is kind of giving way their trade secrets, you should be more than willing to help them out and let them use your video to attract more clients.

The next step in making this customized home workout video is to make sure you have all the equipment in order, so that the trainer only has to show up and train you. If the person offers to use their own equipment that's fine too, but be prepared to bring your video camera, laptop, cd/dvds, whatever you need to make the video happen and take it with you.

*With my at home client, I have all the equipment to shoot video, so she's just showing up with her laptop.

Finally, if you decide to get a new customized at home workout every few weeks or every month from this trainer (*which is what you should do!), do the work. Write down your workouts and share what you've done with the trainer. That way your next video will be even more customized to your needs and strength.

Good luck and Get Moving!
